Dear Second Grade Parents,
I hope the Christmas break was fun and relaxing for you! I sure enjoyed reading the students’ writing about their vacations and hearing all the highlights. It’s a good time to re-stock some of your child’s school supplies. Many of the children need new coloring supplies, pencils, and glue sticks. If you have a sharpener at home and can sharpen new pencils there and send them in, that sure helps. Please do not send in mechanical pencils.
Usually I take the students to the Imaginarium in January, but it is closed at this time for work to make it earthquake-proof. I will schedule a day in February to take the students bowling. I will plan for a Tuesday afternoon from 12:35-2:40. I’ll send information out later to ask for drivers. I want you to have some information on what’s going on in math. We have started timed tests on addition facts and subtraction facts will come later. You can help your child by reviewing facts using flashcards or on-line. We have also been working on range, mode, and median. When practicing these the first step should be to order the numbers from smallest to largest. To find the range subtract the smallest number from the largest number. The mode is the number seen most often in the list. If there is no number listed more than once, then there is no mode. The median is the middle number in the list of numbers ordered smallest to largest. You can help your child practice by giving them a list of numbers and asking them to find the range, mode, and median.
Book report information has gone out and is not due until Thursday, January 28. Please remind your child that this should be very neatly written and the picture should be carefully drawn and colored. Students will have a book report to do each month through May. We will be working on a class Science Fair project to be displayed at the school Science Fair in late March. If you and your child are interested in working on an individual Science Fair project at home, let me know and I’ll get you some information and a backboard. We will be starting on the PTC art fundraiser through Silver Graphics. We did this fundraiser for the first time last year and it was a huge success! Your child will draw and color a picture which can then be put on products of your choice. We will begin working on the pictures next week. I hope 2010 has started out as a great year for you and your family! Thank you for your help and support! Sincerely,
Mrs. Cope

We are well into the swing of second grade and I can't believe how full our days are! We had two very informative assemblies this month. The first was about the Civil War and the students learned about the war, clothing, and had their questions answered. Phil Tulga encouraged students in reading fluency during the most recent assembly. Students clapped and sang their way through the program. The presenter's website is: www.philtulga.com. He mentioned that the directions for some of the instruments he used in the assembly are on his website. Speaking of reading fluency, the take home books came home this week. The reading sheet with parent signatures will be due each Friday. Please spend time each night reading with your child. Also encourage your child to read AR books and take tests at school. If your child is in Camp Cougar or Homework Club, he or she can take tests there also. I have done some testing with math addition and subtraction and found that all students in the class will benefit from practice at home on addition and subtraction. Generally addition of lower numbers is easier than addition of eights and nines and subtraction. You can purchase flash cards at a variety of stores including the Dollar Store or you can make them from index cards. I have plenty of index cards, if you need some just let me know. I am thrilled that so many of you will be able to help in the classroom at various times. Please remember to turn in the school volunteer sheet to the office and recent Tb test results need to be on file als. Don't forget to sign in at the office when you come to volunteer in class. Thank you! We have two upcoming PTC events that will require your help. The first is the Walk-a-thon on Monday, October 5, please help your children obtain sponsors before that date. The second is a second grade basket which will be raffled off at the Fall Festival on October 28. A requested donation of $5 is asked from each second grade family to purchase items for the fishing theme basket. I will call soon to set up times for conferences which will be October 14, 15, and 16. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
Upcoming Events School-wide writing prompt-Wednesday, September 30 Book orders due-Thursday, October 1 Walk-a-thon-Monday, October 5 Minimum days/conferences-October 14, 15, 16 Fall Break-October 19-23 PTC Fall Festival-Wednesday, October 28
